Creating A Pirate Party Theme For Your Child

When you consider how few real memorable experiences there are in a child's life, you should make it as fun as possible. What if you surprise your five-year-old with a pirate party. Invite some of their close friends, go get some pirate party supplies, and decorate the room as if it were a pirate ship.

First, make a treasure chest by taking a big cardboard box. Cut a big circle out of another big piece of cardboard, like a refrigerator box (which they'll hold aside for you, usually, at a hardware store) that has the same diameter as the rectangular box you've chosen to use, then cut that circle in half. Measure (or compute) half the circumference of that circle and cut out another piece of cardboard for the lid. Curve that piece of cardboard into a half-circle to make the lid's top. Hinge the lid to the bottom part with Duct Tape along the inside seam between the lid and the bottom part.

If you want to really get fancy, use paper Mache to build up a more hefty feel to the treasure chest, let it dry and then paint it to look like a treasure chest with tempera paints. Then, go get some pirate party supplies for kids to fill the treasure chest with. So it doesn't look so empty, blow up some balloons and put them inside, Also you can string streamers from one upper-corner to the bottom inside corner. This will give the illusion that it's fuller. You might also build up a false bottom so there isn't so much depth to the chest.

If it's your child's birthday, consider asking the party place if they have pirate birthday party supplies or you can get your party supplies wholesale by going on-line. Cheap party supplies can be gotten at those stores, just ask them if there's a discount table. They almost always have some items which they're trying to phase-out. They might have some that would appropriate when doing a pirate theme. Or, you can try typing 'discount party supplies' into the Google search engine.

Next, you'll have to think of how you can decorate the walls. Find a place where they won't find the treasure chest such as the back recesses of your closet, then find a place which has rolls of butcher paper. Butcher paper is a brown heavy-duty paper that's generally quite cheap. They sometimes also will have printed plastic sheets that might have a pirate theme. The plastic generally is about 4-feet wide, so you'll have to hang it from the ceiling-down; don't forget to purchase some appropriate cardboard trim to decorate the edge where the plastic meets the wall. They tend to be scalloped on one side, so place the flat side towards the plastic sheet that has pirate designs on it, or maybe an ocean that can act as a backdrop for cutouts of pirate ships.

You might even have your child participate in the making of the ships. They'll never suspect that the reason they're doing it will be a party you're planning for them; and they'll be pleasantly surprised when they see their own drawings added to your design. Age 4 to 7 can be wonderful times for such adventures of the heart.
